Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic:

A mobile device for music that brings innovative new features to the mass market. Delivering on Nokia's vision to provide the best total music experience possible, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be among the first devices to support Comes With Music, Nokia's groundbreaking service which offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalogue.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a S60 5th Edition device with a resistive touch screen and tactile feedback. The device has variety of input methods: stylus, plectrum and finger touch support for text input and UI control (alphanumeric keypad, full and mini qwerty keyboard, handwriting recognition). Use the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic to connect to mobile broadband using WLAN or HSDPA (3.5G). Supported WCDMA frequencies depend on the region where the device is available. Find directions and locations with the integrated A-GPS and included maps.

At first glance, we were a little hesitant as the casing has a somewhat cheap and plastic feel and is not to up to Nokia's usual standard. However, after a bit of time with the device it's pretty clear that it won't be breaking apart in your hand any time soon.

Nokia 580 Xpress music is priced at $385 (€279) and should be available in this quarter. A high priced version which includes Nokia’s “Comes With Music” feature will be available early next year. Whether Nokia 5800 could be an iPhone killer only time can tell, but it has got all the features to become one

Music for the masses

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports 60 languages worldwide, which covers nearly 90 percent of the world's population. As people around the world use their phones in different ways, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus and for true music enthusiasts, a plectrum are all available.

Screen

The screen on the 5800 is bright and has a resolution of 640 x 260 pixels which is similar to VGA (640 x 480) devices that we have seen in the Windows Mobile world however it is a lot narrower which does detract from the viewing experience. Having said that it is a lovely clear and crisp screen.

The 5800 is about 20% lighter than the iPhone and it has a 20% smaller "footprint" too. Because it's no larger than a typical N-series phone, the Nokia 5800 should fit easily into a pocket or bag. The 3.2" display on the 5800 is smaller than the 3.5" panel on the Apple iPhone, but the 5800 has a much higher resolution.

Navigating menus with the touch screen was not a great experience, firm presses are required and sometimes multi presses just to get keys to register. The sight of the included stylus makes us cringe as all the other manufacturers and alternative operating systems are putting their energies into finger friendly use and making the stylus a thing of the past, however the huge Asian market still has demand for character recognition so you can see why Nokia are still persisting with this entry system.

Surfing the web was an above average experience, pages rendered reasonably quickly but without any of the easy zooming and text formatting skills of the Safari browser or Opera 9.5 on Windows Mobile, one great feature was the flash player within the browser, watching for example a YouTube embedded video in a browser is definitely the way to go, this worked very well and is one in the eye for Apple.

The 5800 has a built in GPS receiver which works with the included Nokia Maps software and a 3.2 mpx camera with LED flash, picture quality was very good compared with a lot of other phones we have used.

The inbuilt accelerometer works well and is responsive with the screen switching from portrait to landscape as near instantly as possible.
